Airflow Balancing
Mobile App

Mobile UX / Product Design | Johnson Controls

Overview

Designed a mobile application used by HVAC technicians to measure and balance airflow in real-world environments, replacing manual calculations with a guided, streamlined digital workflow.

The Problem

Technicians were required to manually calculate airflow measurements using fragmented tools and complex formulas, leading to:

  • Time-consuming workflows
  • High potential for calculation errors
  • Inconsistent data recording
  • Frustration in field conditions

The process was inefficient, especially in fast-paced or physically demanding environments.

My Role

  • UX/UI Design for mobile application
  • Wireframing and prototyping (Figma / Adobe XD)
  • Collaborated with product managers, engineers, and stakeholders
  • Iterated based on real-world usage constraints

Process

1. Workflow Breakdown

Analyzed how technicians:

  • Measured airflow
  • Performed calculations
  • Recorded and validated results

Identified friction points in:

  • Data entry
  • Step sequencing

Error-prone calculations

2. Simplifying the Flow

Restructured the experience into a step-by-step guided workflow:

  • Reduced cognitive load
  • Eliminated unnecessary decisions
  • Made the process more intuitive

3. Prototyping & Iteration

  • Designed wireframes and interactive prototypes
  • Collaborated with engineering to ensure feasibility
  • Iterated based on feedback and technical constraints

Solution

  • Designed a guided mobile workflow for airflow measurement
  • Reduced reliance on manual calculations
  • Created clear input and feedback states
  • Improved readability and usability in field conditions
  • Standardized the process across users
My Tasks/Devices

This screen serves as a central repository for reports generated at the end of each balancing workflow, allowing technicians to access them later as needed. Additionally, it provides functionality to organize reports by moving them between folders and enables seamless sharing with other technicians via email.

Available Devices

The CWCVT device enables technicians to connect to the HVAC system. Once connected, the app automatically detects and displays all available devices on the network, allowing for seamless integration and system access.

Autocalibration Status

Once the autocalibration process is complete, the airflow test can be conducted, generating a detailed report that the technician can save for future reference.

Outcome

  • Significantly reduced time spent on airflow calculations
  • Minimized user error through guided inputs
  • Improved consistency of recorded data
  • Increased efficiency for field technicians
